A project to address one of the worst traffic chokepoints in the North Bay is heading to a key vote that could bring it closer to completion.
On Dec. 2, the California Transportation Commission is set to vote on appropriating $40.1 million to the Marin-Sonoma Narrows project. The state-led project aims to ease the heavy traffic congestion and long delays along 17 miles of Highway 101 between Novato and Petaluma where the highway narrows from three to two lanes. Before the pandemic, about 146,000 cars and about 6,900 trucks traveled that stretch of highway daily.
The estimated $762 million Marin-Sonoma Narrows project will add a carpool lane to each direction of the highway, which would result in a continuous carpool lane from the north of the Golden Gate Bridge to Santa Rosa, according to Anne Richman, executive director of the Transportation Authority of Marin.
