Sonoma County holiday travelers should prepare for crowded airports and rain

Sonoma County travelers hurrying out of town for the holiday weekend should prepare for busier airports and rain after Christmas.

“It’s going to be pretty condensed when people travel back,” Julian Paredes, AAA spokesperson, said Thursday. “People will be rushing to travel back after Christmas for work.”

Since Christmas falls on a Sunday this year, experts anticipate that tens of thousands of travelers have already ventured out of town or are planning to this weekend.

In California, about 14.8 million people are expected to travel. Of those, about 13.3 million are driving and 1.25 million are flying — about a 14% increase over 2021, according to AAA.

Sonoma County airport Thanksgiving traveler surge spurs parking expansion planning

As Christmas approaches, officials at Charles M. Schulz–Sonoma County Airport are looking for parking solutions after a higher-than-expected passenger crush in November.

“We filled up both of our long-term parking lots, filled up the short-term lot and scrambled to find street parking,” said Airport Manager Jon Stout. “I’m not aware of anybody missing their flights, but it definitely created anxiety and stress.”

In response to the Thanksgiving crush, the airport is upping its social media messaging and encouraging Christmas travelers to make reservations for the parking lots, and also recommending people use alternatives for getting to the airport, such as being dropped off or using Airport Express.

Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport Unveils Modernized Terminal

SANTA ROSA, CA — Sonoma County leaders and officials with Charles M. Schulz – Sonoma County Airport were joined today by representatives from local, state and federal government, tribal leaders, transportation partners, and members of the region’s tourism and business communities, for a grand opening ceremony celebrating the completion of Phase II of the airport’s terminal building. The new air terminal, which is part of an overall $40 million airport modernization project, will open to the public on Wednesday, Nov. 16.

“Charles M. Schulz – Sonoma County Airport is the gateway to our world-class community. A modernized and efficient airport will support our economy and welcome travelers from around the world to Northern California,” said Rep. Mike Thompson, D-St. Helena. “I was proud to help the airport receive $10 million in funding from the FAA Airport Improvement Project, and it is amazing to see the impact that this funding had on this facility. Congratulations to Sonoma County and the airport officials for the grand opening of the newly renovated and modernized terminal hub, and I look forward to seeing how STS will connect us to the world.”

Sonoma County Airport looking for grab-n-go food options

The Charles M. Schulz – Sonoma County Airport, invites qualified businesses and individuals to submit a proposal to provide pre-packaged (aka grab-n-go) food and beverage service in the post-security portion of Gate 2 serving departing passengers and airport personnel.

This location would serve departing passengers and airport personnel located in Gate 2. The beverage service may include the sale of alcohol with the appropriate State of California Alcohol Beverage Control license.

Proposals should provide sufficient information to fully describe the type of food and beverages offered for purchase, the price point range of products sold and the hours the kiosk will be open. The proposal shall be in accordance with the desired Airport goals and objectives listed in the Request for Proposal (RFP).
