Sonoma County follows state and lifts monthlong pandemic lockdown

Although the coronavirus continues infecting Sonoma County residents at an alarming rate and more people in the community have died in January than any month in the pandemic, the county’s top public health official Monday loosened severe restrictions on businesses and public life.

In opting to lift the latest stay-home order in place since Dec. 12, Dr. Sundari Mase followed the lead of state health officials and Gov. Gavin Newsom. Earlier in the day, the governor lifted regional stay-home orders statewide, a move met with surprise and even dismay by some local health officers and medical professionals who questioned the action while the virus rages.

Though Mase’s announcement represented incremental modifications, they will give the local economy a much-needed lift after the level of joblessness spiked in December, reversing steady monthly improvements since last April.

‘Can’t take anymore’: Sonoma County business owners brace for new stay-at-home order

SONOMA COUNTY, Calif. (KGO) — Farmer’s Lane Plaza in Santa Rosa is a more suburban version of Main Street USA where businesses plant themselves and try to grow.

That American dream in California became a bit more difficult today, thanks to Governor Gavin Newsom and COVID-19. With only 3.7% of intensive care beds still available, they’re likely to deal with the consequences of his stay-at-home orders.

“I am very frustrated,” said Rachel Sandoval of Salon Twelve. In the past year, she has endured multiple electrical shut downs, fire scares, and almost five months of being closed because of COVID-19 restrictions. Today, she learned that Governor Gavin Newsom is likely to end her year by imposing weeks more of them.

“Does the governor have credibility with you?” we asked.
