I was on the tarmac at Charles M. Schulz Sonoma County Airport in Santa Rosa about to board my first flight since February 2020. It was an 80-degree day in the valley, and I was sweating in jeans, a jacket and a scarf. Why was I wearing all those layers on such a summery May afternoon?
My ticket, from Santa Rosa to Hollywood Burbank Airport, was on the new ultra-budget airline AVELO, which launched last week as the first major new U.S. airline in 15 years. The carrier, which is based in Burbank (while somewhat inexplicably headquartered in Houston) made a splash not only by launching during a pandemic but for its jaw-droppingly, head-scratchingly low fares.
