On Monday afternoon, several dozen people participated in a march organized by Humboldt County immigrant advocacy group Centro Del Pueblo from the gazebo in Eureka to the Humboldt County courthouse to call on Democrats in the federal government to offer a pathway to citizenship through the Build Back Better bill.
The “Day Without Immigrants” protest aimed to get immigrants to abstain from going to work, school, or shopping on one day to call attention to their cause, saw a few dozen people march with signs and slogans.
“We were invited by organizers from San Francisco and Santa Rosa, to join this day in order to put pressure on the Democrats and others to say ‘we are observing you and we need your promise to be kept to be done,’ ” Brenda Pérez, executive director of Centro Del Pueblo, said.
The Build Back Better Bill — which had the support of both California senators, but is currently stalled — currently offers a form of “parole” for undocumented immigrants who have been in the country since Jan. 1, 2011, but does not offer a pathway to citizenship.
