SRSO hiring crisis: Sheriff looks for recruits in cities prone to defunding police

The Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office is in a hiring crisis.

With 26 openings after several SRSO deputies and dispatchers recently retired or moved out of the area, the agency is struggling to recruit new cadets and dispatchers from within the local community.

Santa Rosa County Sheriff Bob Johnson told the News Journal the solution to the problem is twofold.

First, Johnson plans to request a 10% raise for SRSO personnel at an upcoming Santa Rosa County Board of Commissioners meeting Jan. 21 to bring his agency’s wages in line with those offered by surrounding sheriff’s offices. Currently, the starting salary is about $3,000 below that of Escambia County.
