They trace the ridgelines encircling the bay and spill down into shady evergreen forests of oaks and redwoods. They meander along hundreds of miles of crumbly coastal bluffs and ocean overlooks. They take hikers up the region’s highest heights to the summits of Diablo, Tamalpais and even Twin Peaks.
Living in the Bay Area means never being too far from a great nature trail. There are so many hiking paths, and so much quality open space, that trail lovers are stitching together the bay’s nine counties with a giant contiguous 550-mile loop trail. It could approximate the thru-hiking experience of, say, the Appalachian Trail — as much as that’s possible near a bustling metropolis.
