Freezing, northwest winds will quickly sweep across the Bay Area today, dropping daytime highs by 7 to 10 degrees in parts of the region. This rush of bitter, cold air will be enhanced by today’s passage of a cold front, which will leave a trail of frost in its wake. Today’s cold snap will introduce some of the coldest air of the winter season, with temperatures in inland cities like Walnut Creek and Santa Rosa falling to the lower 30s by tonight.
The coldest day (and night) of the season
Residents on the coast will be waking up to temperatures in the lower 40s for the first time in weeks, with a few patches of the shoreline potentially falling to the upper 30s before sunrise. This unusual weather setup on the coast will be driven by an amped up cold front.
Oftentimes, these fronts struggle to drop temperatures in the coast and bays of the region thanks to the influence from warmer sea-surface temperatures. But this week’s setup will be different, and that’s because of just how strong this upcoming cold front is shaping up to be.
